In Celebration of International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) we asked the women across UNICAT a simple but powerful question:
What problem are you most passionate about solving?
Below we share a mixture of answers we got from a variety of roles across the business.
The answers reflected the diverse roles, experiences, and expertise that help drive our business forward every day. From engineering and technical sales to project management, marketing, and recruitment, one common theme emerged: a passion for making a meaningful difference.
Solving Customer Challenges and Delivering Results
From Regional Sales Perspective:
“The problem I am most passionate about solving is helping customers find better ways to address challenges that have often been accepted as just part of running a plant.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with innovative companies that bring new solutions to the table, especially when those solutions solve real problems, improve plant performance, and give customers more confidence in how they operate. When you can offer a solution that truly makes a difference in their operations, there really is no better feeling.
The relationship side matters just as much. Over time, you get to know the people behind the plant, not just the company name. You understand what they are dealing with, you care about the outcome, and in many cases, those working relationships become genuine friendships.
I truly enjoy what I do and consider myself fortunate to work in an industry where every day presents new challenges, opportunities to learn, and the chance to help customers succeed. Not everyone gets to say they enjoy their job this much, and I never take that for granted.”
From Technical Specialist Perspective
“I'm passionate about helping bridge the gap between our customers, our solutions, and our people. On the business side, that means helping our Technical Sales team better understand customer challenges and how our solutions can address them, while also sharing knowledge with our Technical Services and Engineering teams to help develop the next generation of subject matter experts. Ultimately, it's about showcasing UNICAT's unique capabilities and helping customers solve problems more effectively.”
From Technical Sales Manager Perspective:
“I'm passionate about turning complex engineering challenges into practical solutions that work in real operating conditions. Whether supporting a catalyst loading, plant start-up, or troubleshooting a process issue, I enjoy helping customers achieve reliable and efficient results. Seeing a solution make a real difference to plant performance and customer success is the most rewarding part of my job.”
From Junior Engineer Perspective:
“I am most passionate about solving problems that make a positive difference. I am driven by the opportunity to develop solutions that create long-term value.”
Building Strong Teams and Leading Through Challenge
From a Project Leadership Perspective:
“One of the toughest challenges I’ve faced—and continue to navigate—is earning respect and challenging perceptions around women leading a team of men in a traditionally male-dominated industry. It hasn’t always been straightforward; there have been times where I’ve had to work harder to ensure my voice is heard and my decisions are trusted. However, overcoming those challenges and successfully delivering complex projects as a team is something I find incredibly rewarding.
What I value just as much is the team itself. I genuinely enjoy working with them— and there are some real characters! Building those relationships, forming friendships, and working closely together with such a diverse group of people has helped us develop strong mutual trust. We support one another and still have a laugh along the way, which makes a huge difference day to day.
Through this experience, I’ve learned that great leadership isn’t about gender—it’s about communication, trust, and bringing out the best in people. When you create that kind of environment, it doesn’t feel like work when you come in each day, and that’s when delivering successful projects becomes even more fulfilling.”
Sharing Knowledge and Supporting Future Generations
From an Engineering and Mentoring Perspective:
“Rather than a problem, I see it as a challenge, I’m passionate about helping to transform. I’m most passionate about mentoring and supporting the next generation of women in engineering. Sharing both my technical knowledge and life experience especially in a field that has traditionally been male-dominated is something I find truly meaningful and rewarding.”
Empowering people to take pride in what they deliver
From a Quality perspective
“I’m passionate about improving how quality is positioned within engineering—not as a compliance function, but as a true driver of performance and progress. At UNICAT, I focus on building a culture where quality is owned at every level, empowering people to take pride in what they deliver. By encouraging proactive, prevention-based thinking, the aim is to bridge engineering excellence, business success, and customer trust—helping create stronger, more sustainable outcomes for the future.”
Communicating Value and Creating Connections
From a Marketing Perspective:
“The best part of my job is turning technical expertise into clear, engaging messages. It's rewarding to showcase the work we do at UNICAT and help customers understand the value behind it."
From a Talent and Recruitment Perspective:
“I'm most passionate about solving the challenge of connecting the right people with the right opportunities. What motivates me is understanding what drives individuals, recognising their potential, and helping them find environments where they can thrive. When the right person finds the right role, the impact extends far beyond a job title; it benefits teams, organisations, and the individual themselves. Seeing those connections lead to long-term success is what makes my work so rewarding.”
These perspectives demonstrate that engineering is about far more than technology alone. It is about solving problems, building relationships, developing people, sharing knowledge, and creating lasting impact for customers, colleagues, and communities.
This International Women in Engineering Day, we are proud to recognise the talented women across UNICAT who help solve challenges, deliver results, drive innovation, and shape the future of our industry every day.
